I am a New York-based artist who specializes in oil and pastel portraits and interiors. I've always been fascinated by the emotional and philosophical qualities of light, and have been captivated since my youth by the works of Vermeer and Velazquez.
My main source of formal training came from the High School of Music and Art, where I attended from 1982 to 1986. I decided to go to a liberal arts college, Williams, rather than art school. However, I've learned so much since at "The Painting Group", an art class founded by David Levine and Aaron Shikler, which meets every Wednesday on Green Street in Soho, and which I've attended for twenty years now. Working in the class on a regular basis has helped me refine my abilities to render the figure through drawing and painting from a live model, as well as giving me exposure to painters who share my aesthetic sense.
I took three trips to Italy, in 1989, 1993, and 1995, and I believe these experiences affected my early development more than anything else, chiefly through being exposed to Rome: its light, its history, and of course, its art.
Since then, the most important development in my life has certainly been the births of my three wonderful sons. Much of my current work is about the wonders and perils of childhood and growing up.
